  1. Thanks for posting the NYT article.

    While I agree that “eliminat[ing] the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on [factory farms]” may be “far better than doing nothing at all,” it’s just the latest of many efforts to do just about anything rather than merely consider one’s eating habits.

    In fact, this proposal would presumably enable factory farms to be more productive (i.e. slaughter more animals) than ever. Once protestations of animal suffering are silenced, large scale slaughter can proceed unchecked.

    Now that we’re prepared to affirm genetically engineering the sensation of pain out of nonhuman animals, what is left to do in the name of avoiding any change in our relationship with them?
